What cars do Ukrainians buy abroad?

Since the beginning of 2025, Ukrainians have imported more than 181 thousand passenger cars, with almost 80% of them being used. Despite this, the cost of new cars has practically equaled that of used cars: $1.2 billion versus $1.37 billion, respectively. Such data was published by the State Customs Service of Ukraine, reports Lardi.Today.

The largest revenue to the budget was provided by the import of used cars – UAH 16 billion in customs payments, while new cars replenished the state treasury by UAH 10.7 billion. In total, for the first five months of 2025, car imports brought UAH 26.7 billion to the budget.

Regarding the popularity of fuel types, Ukrainians mainly choose gasoline cars – they account for 48.5% of all imported cars. In second place are electric cars (22.1%), which bypassed diesel (20.6%) and hybrid (8.8%) cars.

The electric car segment is growing especially rapidly: since the beginning of the year, more than 40 thousand units have been imported for a total of $810 million. For comparison: gasoline cars were imported twice as much, but their total cost exceeded the figure for electric cars by only $8 million — $818 million.

The average price of one electric car is over $20 thousand, diesel — almost $13 thousand, and gasoline — about $9 thousand. Due to tax breaks, electric cars provided the budget with only UAH 333 million, while gasoline cars brought in over UAH 13 billion, diesel — UAH 7.7 billion, and hybrids — UAH 5.5 billion.

Ukraine imports cars from more than 50 countries, but the leaders remain:

• USA — 69 thousand cars (38%),
• Poland — 22.3 thousand (12%),
• Germany — 20.4 thousand (11%).

Together, these three countries accounted for over 60% of all imports. The US dominates both gasoline and electric vehicles, while Poland and Germany dominate diesel vehicles. At current rates, 2025 is set to be a record year for electric vehicle imports.
