The introduction of quarantine restrictions has impacted international road transport worldwide. As of March 17, 107 borders were closed, and by April 7, only 19 remained open.
Despite the easing in the summer and business revival, in recent months, with the increase in COVID-19 cases in the EU, more countries are introducing new restrictions.
For instance, starting November 2, several regions in Italy have prohibited travel on roads at night. This includes Lombardy, Piedmont, Sicily, where the ban on truck movement is from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Lazio, and Calabria — from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
On November 2, Belgium announced strict isolation (and curfew). This does not apply to international freight transport: drivers can carry out deliveries during curfew hours but must prove the necessity — either with CMR or a certificate issued by the employer. Additionally, if a driver stays in Belgium for more than 48 hours, they must complete the Passenger Locator Form. The curfew applies: in Flanders — from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM, Brussels — from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Wallonia — from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
When planning international shipments, be prepared to answer the following questions:
– Where is sanitary control implemented at borders?
– Where are special permits required?
– Where is truck movement fully or partially restricted?
We share links to interactive maps and current data on restrictions and requirements at borders and on roads in European countries. Please consider this information when planning logistics.
