Intermodal transportation is an ideal option for standard, bulk and regular cargo. This can be raw materials, building materials, industrial equipment, etc.

Multimodality is also suitable for urgent deliveries due to minimal delays – everything is issued under one consignment number.

What equipment is used for different types of transportation

To simplify combined transportation, various equipment is used in logistics. The key element here is the container.

A container is the only universal cargo unit that allows you to move goods without reloading between modes of transport: rail, sea, road, etc. This optimizes logistics, because the cargo does not need to be unpacked at each stage of the route. It is loaded once into a container, which is then easily tracked and transferred between different carriers. In this regard, the container must be suitable for everyone and comply with international standards. For example, an ISO container has the same dimensions, design, and mounting angles, regardless of transport, carrier and country.

ISO container is a standardized and universal container, which is the main cargo unit for both intermodal and multimodal transportation. ISO container complies with international ISO standards (ISO 668 series, ISO 6346, etc.), its types may vary depending on the contents inside. Container transportation will cope with heavy and oversized, chemical and dry cargo. ISO container will provide strong protection and the correct temperature regime.

Other equipment used for combined transportation:

  1. by rail: platforms, wagons, tanks;
  2. for aviation: ULD containers;
  3. for road transport: semi-trailers (trailers), container ships, refrigerators;
  4. for sea / river transport: container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, Ro-Ro ships.

Intermodal and multimodal transportation is not a question of which is better or worse, and it is not at all about the competition of two types of deliveries. These two logistical approaches are interconnected and effective. They allow you to combine different types of transport in a single chain that will be universal and reliable, and at the same time flexible and adaptive.

To make a choice between transportation formats, it is important to determine the goals of the business, the nature of the cargo and the regularity of deliveries. However, any option will provide cost optimization, increase logistics efficiency and expand the possibilities of entering new markets.
