How to avoid risks in transporting groupage cargo: advice from our logisticians

Today, more and more Ukrainian companies are choosing less-than-truckload (LTL) cargo as the optimal solution for delivering small batches of goods. It is convenient, profitable and fast. However, as with any type of transportation, groupage transportation has its risks. TVL experts have prepared a number of tips on how to secure your cargo and avoid unpleasant situations.

  1. Check the documents carefully before shipping. Even a small mistake in the waybill or customs declaration can delay the entire flight.
  2. Ensure that each seat is properly labeled. Provide complete information: sender, recipient, contact number, and order number. It is advisable to add a QR code or barcode.
  3. Use reliable packaging. Even if the product is not fragile, remember that in groupage cargo it may come into contact with heavy or non-standard parcels.
  4. Evaluate the actual parameters of the cargo. Inform the carrier in advance about the weight, volume, specifics (fragile, liquid, dangerous, etc.). This will help to avoid problems during loading.
  5. Insure the cargo at its real value. Minimum insurance does not cover most risks. We recommend additional insurance for valuable, fragile and seasonal goods.
  6. Order the “last mile” service if control at the final stage of delivery is important.
  7. Plan your shipments taking into account peak periods. During holidays, rates increase and the risk of delays is much higher.
  8. Track your shipments in real time. Choose carriers with convenient online tracking and prompt feedback.
  9. Agree on a list of hubs and terminals along the route. Additional transshipment means additional risks of damage or loss of packaging.
  10. Choose a carrier with experience in groupage transportation. Specialized companies know the specifics of this area better and work according to well-established schemes.
